I just wanted to give out a SINCERE thank you to all our friends and our clients and family who have been so understanding and patient during this hard time for us. When my father in law became very ill in August, and we knew we wouldn't have him here for long, I was unable to concentrate on work. Our son had left for College at the end of August and that was a huge adjustment, hes been such a joy and having an empty nest does take some getting used to.

Then my father in law was yo-yoing, doing great one day and near death the next, then he passed away Dec. 9th, and it was very hard on my husband and all of us. A month later our beloved dog got ill on a family ski trip and through a series of events, she passed away unexpectedly. My office manager moved and I did not hire a replacement for her, and Ive turned away a lot of work since August. I have been going through I guess what some would call a mid life crisis, thinking about what I want to do with the rest of my life.

My husband will be retiring after 27 years in the Military and there are a lot of questions to ask ourselves. If we want to move closer to the coast? Or to Dallas to be nearer family? If I want to continue being a professional photographer, or possibly try my hand at returning to school for my teaching certificate?

Although I have loved my life as a professional photographer for the past 22 years (my first photographer job was in 1990, when I worked as a staff photographer and reporter for THE BROWNWOOD BULLETIN NEWSPAPER in Brownwood, Texas after my education at Texas Tech U.)

I have cut my hours back and am still photographing, I'm just only open 2-3 days a week now. I am currently accepting weddings for 2012 and recently booked 2. I know that my absence has been confusing to some of you treasured clients, but I have just been looking inward, taking a sabbatical, enjoying my 2 grandsons that live nearby and daughter and son-in-law and reading my bible, and enjoying some hobbies that I haveput off for years including gardening, sewing and journaling.

I just wanted you to know that I do appreciate you all, and I'm sorry for my absence, but i really have needed this time to heal, and to think and reflect.

I kept up a full schedule in my studio for 13 years working 6 days a week, which was exhausting! and I guess seeing people I love pass away made me realize that life isn't all about work. My grandsons bring me so much joy and my marriage is getting better because I have more free time.

Thanks for understanding. I just need to put life on PAUSE for a bit and breathe and think and sleep. I don't have someone answering the studio phone full time like i did the past 13 years, but I do try to return calls,when I can, and always answer my emails. Pdixie@sw.rr.com Ive even enjoyed chatting on facebook with some of you.

Thanks for understanding. I'm hoping in March to be back full time, with a renewed love of this occupation and enjoying some ME time and quiet time. I'm here by email or facebook (Dixie Dobbins) whenever you need me. Thanks again. Now back to that novel Ive been reading and doing some more editing of photographs.

Homeless teen has 3.9 GPA and works hard each day!

When I heard about this teenager, high school senior Samantha Garvey, I just stopped in my tracks. I first heard about her on KLOVE Christian radio, and thought, wow, now that's a girl, who doesn't let anything stop her from doing what she knows is most important.

She was on the TODAY SHOW on NBC this morning,and also recently on the Ellen DeGeneres show. Here's to an amazing young lady who works hard despite the turmoil her families life is in. WOW WOW I just want to give her a big hug! I wish her nothing but the best, her story brought me to tears because of her never quit attitude and her big dreams. Shes going to be hugely successful. (Sorry about the short commercial before, Its worth it to wait to see it!)

We lost our beautiful Sheltie Ginger

The last photo I ever took of our Beloved Ginger, Sunday January 8th, 2012 @ 2:33 pm. The day before she passed away.

Im so sad to share this with you guys, but our beautiful 13 year old Sheltie Ginger passed away Monday night at the Callfield Companion Animal Clinic at around 10:00 pm. Ginger was 13 and in excellent health, until we had left for a ski trip and she became lethargic and ill on the trip. Lets just say her bathroom habits changed and she was not interested in eating or drinking water and began vomitting too.

A few days there, We discovered one of her breasts was swollen and took her to the Vets office, where they put her to sleep and drained it and pulled a few of her teeth that were not doing well. She just never really seemed normal after this, she still would not eat, or take water and was very lethargic and sad. We had to force her to take her medication. We thought she would do better with time, but she barely survived our drive back to Wichita Falls. We rushed her at night to the clinic and Dr. Spears informed us that she was very very sick and that she might not survive. We just did not believe that such a beautiful and strong dog wouldn't make it and we were heartbroken when he called us shortly after leaving his office to tell us she stopped breathing. We think that since she couldnt hold down her antibiotics that the infection spread through her body very fast and gave her 105 degree temp. We have been devastated.

Losing a pet has been one of the hardest things Ive ever had to go through. I feel guilty for not fighting harder for her and insisting she get an IV for water and meds intravenously before we left new Mexico. I should have trusted my instincts. I think God gives us instincts and to "TRUST YOUR GUT" as a friend of mine says.
I have had a very hard time dealing with her passing. Ive had many friends lift me up and remind me that she had a beautiful life, but I cant help but just cry a lot because she was my best friend.

You see i moved my studio home 4 years ago and we built an addition and she was always here by my side. She was 13 and I used to take her to work with me at my studio sometimes too. She even came into some photo shoots. (Ive had a few people purchase pictures of themselves with her, when she wandered into a session!) Everyone loved Ginger who met her. She was gentle, loving and sweet and very very smart. Shetland Shepdogs are highly intelligent and intuitive. Our son was with me home from college and got to spend her last days with her.

I have photographed many pets and love Dogs and Cats. Ginger was very special and was always so kind to everyone. My mother who does not like Dogs, came to visit and was annoyed at first by Ginger. In only a few hours, she came to LOVE HER and told me that Ginger had ESP and could read her mind. Ginger knew my mother was in pain with her hips (about to have double hip replacement surgery) and Ginger sat by my mother guarding and watching over my mother during the days my mom was here. Needless to say, My mom Fell in love with her. Shelties are sheep herding dogs and they spend lots of time sitting and watching sheep and protecting them from any predators. This intelligence and hyper vigilance makes them wonderful dogs for children or elderly or anyone for that matter.

We will miss her terribly. I don't mind saying that Ive cried my eyes out for days since her passing and we are waiting to have her cremains returned to us so we can sprinkle them in the Spring in her favorite spot in our backyard under the trees.
I am always honored when people bring their dogs and cats for photo sessions, because I have so much respect and love for animals. The Love us with the most beautiful purest love there is.

Thank you for letting me voice this so personal story. I am actually taking some time off of work to grieve. I hope if you have pets, that you give them extra love for me, because you never know how much time they have left. Pet them, hold them and love on them all you can. Thanks for listening and thanks for your prayers. My husband and son of course are taking it hard as well. We bawled for over an hour after that phone call Monday night, even my mother in law. First I lost my father in law on Dec. 9th and my beloved Ginger on Jan. 9th. Its been a very difficult last few weeks.

Scott was 6 when Ginger came to live with us a 6 week old pup. 13 years is a long time, RIP sweet Ginger, you will be missed. Angel Fire, New Mexico

Recently we went to Angel Fire and Taos New Mexico! A good friend of ours bought a beautiful home there and gave us the keys for a week. We had such a grea time. With my husbands father passing away in December, we made a trip to the beautiful mountains and brought along my sweet mother in law and our son who is home from college and a friend of his also and our beautiful doggie Ginger.

It was a great trip. This beautiful home is 7,000 square feet, and worth over 1.2 million, and is just spectacular. Just a beautiful warm cabin, with heated radiant rock floors, gorgeous details and wood work and 5 bedrooms, 3 baths and 3 living areas! Very secluded in the pines. We fell in love. Thank you so much Matt and Lela for letting us have a wonderful ski vacation in Angel Fire.

Chocolate Dipped Candy Canes

Me and my mother in law Melba, made some wonderful Chocolate covered Candy Canes, to stir our Hot Chocolate with. See the Recipe below on how to make your own!

Hot chocolate is one of my fave things to drink in the winter time. ive got a Keruig and can make a single cup of Hot Cocoa anytime and its an addiction, and when you add a chocolate dipped candy cane, it's heavenly! These are delicious eaten on their own too!

RECIPE FOR CHOCOLATE DIPPED CANES
ITEMS YOU NEED:

•candy canes
•chocolate chips or melting chocolate--white & milk/dark
•floral foam
•tinfoil or wax paper

DIRECTIONS:

1. Starting at the crook, unwrap the candy canes halfway.

2. Melt your milk or dark chocolate in a large glass bowl.(You can use a double boiler, and stir frequently, or you can microwave it in only small 10 second at a time, and stirring in between, honestly I like a double boiler better, because if you microwave too much, you can "cook" the chocolate and it ruins it. (or so Ive heard.)

If you're using chocolate chips, make sure to add a little shortening--it will make the chocolate much more smooth and easier to work with. For one bag of chips, use about 1 Tablespoon of shortening (Crisco) My mother in law likes to use "ALMOND BARK" chocolate.

If you have a sweet Gram to help you, (like I do) then by all means, solicit her help!

3. Dip the crook and top half the candy cane into the chocolate, holding it by the bottom wrapped part. Twist and shake off any excess chocolate, then stick it into the floral foam to dry. Once you're finished dipping, place into the fridge to firm up--about 5 or so minutes.
(I forgot to take a pic of this step!)

4. Once firm, take the candy canes out of the fridge, and lay them out on a piece of aluminum foil or wax paper. Melt the white chocolate chips in a small glass bowl until smooth. Place the white chocolate into the corner of a sandwich bag, then snip off a tiny piece of the corner--now you have your piping bag! Drizzle the white chocolate over the chocolate, then let harden.

You can put the in bags, or display them pretty like I did here and give them to anyone! Remember babies and toddlers can choke on hard candy.

Merry Christmas from the Dobbins family

Christmas is so many things, Its the birth of our savior, its family, its love and comfort and peace. Its seeing childrens faces opening gifts, its spending time with loved ones that maybe you dont see as often, but mostly it is to celebrate Jesus Christ, our savior.

We enjoy watching all the movies, "Its a wonderful life" (my favorite) "Miracle on 42nd street" but one of my silly favorites is "A Christmas Story." I dont know why I like it so much but I do. I guess I had a pretty eventful childhood and this little boy does too. I love the part where he puts his tongue on the pole and it freezes to the pole. I actually did that once, but it was in the freezer, when I was in 3rd grade. My dad was close by thankfully and poured some warm water on it and it unfroze, but I still tore some of the flesh off my tongue!

So this year I wanted to do something fun for us. I hope you like our silly card this year! I came up with the idea, shot it in the studio (on self timer) and did all the artwork. Fun stuff. Anyway, Merry Christmas Yall! From Photography by Dixie and the Dobbins family.

I have had the pleasure of photographing these sweet sisters for several years now! Holland, the oldest for 3 years and her sweet 1 year old baby sister Britton for the past year. Their mama is very organized and always gets them in, each and every single month for the portraits their first year!

This a cell phone photo, my uncle took of my Husband giving the flag from his fathers casket to his mother Yesterday. It was a full church and very long procession. My father in law was very loved and respected by so many. He was buried in the beautiful veterans cememtary in Dallas yesterday. Thanks for all your condolences and acts of kindness of late. I was able to hold in my grief until a pastor who knew Jerry well said the words. I know that when Jesus greeted Jerry, he said "Well done, my Loyal and Faithful Servant, well done."

THE DAFFODIL PRINCIPLE by Jaroldeen Asplund Edwards

Several times my daughter had telephoned to say, "Mother, you must come and see the daffodils before they are over." I wanted to go, but it was a two-hour drive from Laguna to Lake Arrowhead. Going and coming took most of a day--and I honestly did not have a free day until the following week.

"I will come next Tuesday, " I promised, a little reluctantly, on her third call.

Next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy. Still, I had promised, and so I drove the length of Route 91, continued on I-215, and finally turned onto Route 18 and began to drive up the mountain highway. The tops of the mountains were sheathed in clouds, and I had gone only a few miles when the road was completely covered with a wet, gray blanket of fog. I slowed to a crawl, my heart pounding.

The road becomes narrow and winding toward the top of the mountain. As I executed the hazardous turns at a snail's pace, I was praying to reach the turnoff at Blue Jay that would signify I had arrived.

When I finally walked into Carolyn's house and hugged and greeted my grandchildren I said, "Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is invisible in the clouds and fog, and there is nothing in the world except you and these darling children that I want to see bad enough to drive another inch!"

My daughter smiled calmly," We drive in this all the time, Mother."

"Well, you won't get me back on the road until it clears--and then I'm heading for home!" I assured her.
I muttered all the way. After about twenty minutes we turned onto a small gravel road that branched down into an oak-filled hollow on the side of the mountain.

We parked in a small parking lot adjoining a little stone church. On the far side of the church I saw a pine-needle-covered path, with towering evergreens and manzanita bushes and an inconspicuous, lettered sign "Daffodil Garden."

We each took a child's hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path as it wound through the trees. The mountain sloped away from the side of the path in irregular dips, folds, and valleys, like a deeply creased skirt.

Live oaks, mountain laurel, shrubs, and bushes clustered in the folds, and in the gray, drizzling air, the green foliage looked dark and monochromatic. I shivered. Then we turned a corner of the path, and I looked up and gasped. Before me lay the most glorious sight, unexpectedly and completely splendid. It looked as though someone had taken a great vat of gold and poured it down over the mountain peak and slopes where it had run into every crevice and over every rise.

Even in the mist-filled air, the mountainside was radiant, clothed in massive drifts and waterfalls of daffodils. The flowers were planted in majestic, swirling patterns, great ribbons and swaths of deep orange, white, lemon yellow, salmon pink, saffron, and butter yellow.

Each different-colored variety (I learned later that there were more than thirty-five varieties of daffodils in the vast display) was planted as a group so that it swirled and flowed like its own river with its own unique hue.

In the center of this incredible and dazzling display of gold, a great cascade of purple grape hyacinth flowed down like a waterfall of blossoms framed in its own rock-lined basin, weaving through the brilliant daffodils.

A charming path wound throughout the garden. There were several resting stations, paved with stone and furnished with Victorian wooden benches and great tubs of coral and carmine tulips. As though this were not magnificence enough, Mother Nature had to add her own grace note -- above the daffodils, a bevy of western bluebirds flitted and darted, flashing their brilliance. These charming little birds are the color of sapphires with breasts of magenta red. As they dance in the air, their colors are truly like jewels above the blowing, glowing daffodils. The effect was spectacular.

It did not matter that the sun was not shining. The brilliance of the daffodils was like the glow of the brightest sunlit day. Words, wonderful as they are, simply cannot describe the incredible beauty of that flower-bedecked mountain top.

Five acres of flowers! (This too I discovered later when some of my questions were answered.) "But who has done this?" I asked Carolyn. I was overflowing with gratitude that she brought me -- even against my will. This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

"Who?" I asked again, almost speechless with wonder, "And how, and why, and when?"

"It's just one woman," Carolyn answered. "She lives on the property. That's her home." Carolyn pointed to a well-kept A-frame house that looked small and modest in the midst of all that glory.

We walked up to the house, my mind buzzing with questions.

On the patio we saw a poster. " Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking" was the headline. The first answer was a simple one.

"50,000 bulbs," it read. The second answer was,

"One at a time, by one woman, two hands, two feet, and very little brain." The third answer was,

"Began in 1958."
There it was. The Daffodil Principle.

For me that moment was a life-changing experience. I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who, more than thirty-five years before, had begun -- one bulb at a time -- to bring her vision of beauty and joy to an obscure mountain top. One bulb at a time.

There was no other way to do it. One bulb at a time. No shortcuts -- simply loving the slow process of planting. Loving the work as it unfolded.

Loving an achievement that grew so slowly and that bloomed for only three weeks of each year. Still, just planting one bulb at a time, year after year, had changed the world.

This unknown woman had forever changed the world in which she lived. She had created something of ineffable magnificence, beauty, and inspiration.

The principle her daffodil garden taught is one of the greatest principle of celebration: learning to move toward our goals and desires one step at a time -- often just one baby-step at a time -- learning to love the doing, learning to use the accumulation of time.

When we multiply tiny pieces of time with small increments of daily effort, we too will find we can accomplish magnificent things. We can change the world.

"Carolyn," I said that morning on the top of the mountain as we left the haven of daffodils, our minds and hearts still bathed and bemused by the splendors we had seen, "it's as though that remarkable woman has needle-pointed the earth! Decorated it. Just think of it, she planted every single bulb for more than thirty years. One bulb at a time! And that's the only way this garden could be created. Every individual bulb had to be planted. There was no way of short-circuiting that process. Five acres of blooms. That magnificent cascade of hyacinth!

All, all, just one bulb at a time."

The thought of it filled my mind. I was suddenly overwhelmed with the implications of what I had seen. "It makes me sad in a way," I admitted to Carolyn. "What might I have accomplished if I had thought of a wonderful goal thirty-five years ago and had worked away at it 'one bulb at a time' through all those years. Just think what I might have been able to achieve!"

My wise daughter put the car into gear and summed up the message of the day in her direct way. "Start tomorrow," she said with the same knowing smile she had worn for most of the morning. Oh, profound wisdom!

It is pointless to think of the lost hours of yesterdays. The way to make learning a lesson a celebration instead of a cause for regret is to only ask, "How can I put this to use tomorrow?"

Prayers for my Father in Law

Im very sad to say, that my Husbands dad, Jerry, is battling Brain cancer. He has bravely fought for a few months now and according to his neurologist, only has days left to live. We've each told him our goodbyes and told him it is OK, to relax and go to heaven. Hes fought the good fight. Jerry and his wife have been very involved in their church, the church we were married in, Northgate United Methodist in Irving, for over 45 years. Jerry taught Sunday school and his wife has been the church secretary and volunteer for many many years.

I'm glad that Ive been able to spend time with him. Our son is taking it very hard as he is very close to his paternal grandparents. They attended almost every single football game he played in, and many many of his power lifting meets. They would make the 5 hour round trip drive to support him in his athletic events and has never missed a Christmas with him in 18 years, including his very first Christmas in Japan!
Please say a prayer for Jerry and our family, the Dobbins, who are all gathered with him in Irving, during this difficult time. I for one know, that once he does pass, Jesus will say to Jerry, "Well Done my Loyal and Faithful Servant. Well Done."

Surprise Snowfall Last night!

This morning I woke up and my husband and I were getting ready for our day and I happened to notice out the window that it snowed last night! WoW I didnt even know it was supposed to. It was a light snow fall, but snow NONETHELESS! As i was gazing out the window, I noticed the house across the street that is for sale, had snow on its beautiful rose bushes. Since Ive been watering these roses with my own water the past few weeks, I had to go and rescue them. You see I cannot stand to see any living thing suffer.

I've always been that way. Seeing the snow on the beautiful roses and rose buds, made me think about how life can be hard on the delicate things in this world. That something so beautiful and fragile was happy one day and basking in the warm temps and the next, was shocked by ice and snow landing on it. Made me think of the song "CANDLE IN THE WIND". I want to rescue the world. I cant help it. Ok, I know im getting corny here, but I mean it. Lets all take care of the delicate things in this world. Children, animals, dogs, cats, squirrells, Lets be good Stewards of the things that God puts in our paths. We are not supposed to only think of ourselves.

We are to think of everything and everyone, that comes across our paths. Lets slow down and give what we have to help others. Espically this holiday season. Now I have a beautiful Vase of flowers on my bedroom night stand to enjoy.

In my life, espically when I was in my early 20s, there have been times when a few people had noticed my vulnerbility and had helped me.

Had brought me in from the cold. Had seen the beauty inside me, the vulnerability and how fragile I was, and then rescued me of sorts. And there have been those, who turned a blind eye and let me suffer.

God is like that also, he knows we are weak, and he knows we need him and each other. He will shelter us from the cold and from the ones who wish us harm. So that we can bask in the warmth of his love and his comfort. I chose to love, to give and to help. You see, when you help and give, you get back too. But thats not the reason to give, just give and help and it will all work out in the end. Have a beautiful week!

I found the acorns in the park, so this was a very cheap project. The most expensive thing was the Snow man, whom I picked up at HOBBY LOBBY for $5. Its a very heavy wreath but I think he will love it! Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas Y'ALL!

Love this young lady and her family. First time I photographed her, she was just a young girl, and shes been back several times. Now shes graduating from MSU with a degree in Psychology! I love making things for our home, especially things from nature! Doesn't Nature have the most beautiful things in the world? I recently made a wreath from Large acorns I found in the park near my home. (See below this text on how I did it!) Ive never seen Acorns that big in my life! (They were the size of PECANS!) And whats amazing is I had just enough to make this wreath. My fingers were sore from twisting off the rough tops that the acorns grow on the trees from. Ive been acorn crazy this year.Since my 4 year old grandson told me "I love you Grammy, like a squirrel loves an ACORN" and then he laughed hysterically for a few minutes. So now, Ive got acorns all over my house to think of him! And he and I collected some together a month ago when he was here for a sleep over.

I am going to make two of these and paint one of them and leave one natural. I made the natural one, so now time to make the other. I think I will paint it Aggie Maron to surprise our son who is a Freshman at Texas A&M at College station. Ok, So I gotta go out and collect more Acorns in the rain now. :-) Have a blessed weekend, and hope you can do some crafts with your kids to get ready for the holiday season!

The wreath weighs a lot, I am not going to use this ribbon, its all I had on hand, Im going to use Raffia, but I wanted to hang it for a photo for you. I bought the straw wreath at MICHAELS store and I hot glued the acorns on the wreath. It took me a couple of hours to hot glue them, but i did it while watching David Letterman and enjoying a glass of wine one evening. I only burned my fingers two times! It is very heavy, but I think its beautiful. The reason that you bake the acorns in the oven is because occassionally there might be "critters" inside the acorns I have heard and you dont want them boring out and damaging your acorns. The extra ones, i tossed in the front yard for the squirrells to find and store away. I hope you enjoy making your own wreath, when I finish the 2nd one Ill post images of it too! Happy Weekend!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families! As a mom and now a grandma, I love cooking thanksgiving dinner, with all the trimmings. I especially love decorating our home for it as well. Bruce and I just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary, and our son Scott was able to come home from Texas A&M university (a 5 hour drive to Wichita Falls for him) and my daughter and her husband and 2 boys, Tristan 13 and Aaron 4 years old.

We had a wonderful time. My husband always cooks the turkey and then I do most of the rest. This was the first year that I ever cooked a Pecan pie. Can you imagine? A Texas Girl who's never cooked a pecan pie?! Well, that's because my mother or my mother in law usually do the pies. I love making the stuffing (family recipe) and the mashed potatoes and the green bean casserole, etc. I also made bread (buttery croissant rolls) and fruit salad.

My father in law and mother in law were not able to be with us this year, as my father in law is recovering from a broken hip from a recent fall and is in a Rehab center in IRVING,TX. Our thoughts and prayers were with them, and we spoke to them and they had friends from church there with them. Its just not the same without them however.

I hope you all took the time to think about what you are truly Grateful to God for! We are grateful for my husbands upcoming retirement from the USAF (26 years service!) and my Photography business (in its 15th year in Wichita Falls.) So grateful for our military friends all over the world, and our families. Grateful that we still have both sets of parents and that our children were with us.
We have our health, we are in our late 40s and its more and more important to exercise, eat right and to de-stress. I find LAUGHTER is the best DE STRESSER and our 4 year old grandson keeps me laughing. He is always saying something cute or funny. Also funny movies and fun friends help too!
Even though our country is in an economic situation right now, and the war is still waging in the middle east, we know that we were born in one of the most wonderful times in History. We have heat, running water, hot and cold, plumbing, a beautiful home, 4 automobiles and lots and lots of love. I think about my Nana who passed away 9 years ago and her stories about going to the outhouse and not having hot water and how she cooked on a wood stove in Wortham , Texas.
I am so grateful for so many things. One thing I always like to remember, an old saying I heard someplace once. "Ive never met a grateful, bitter person and Ive never met a bitter, Grateful person." Its true. We all have our ups and downs in life, but to have an attitude of gratitude truly will serve you well, and make this journey that much more enjoyable.

Sometimes in life, we are so busy running our own agendas, trying to get through work, life, duties, demands, etc. upon our time. We are always striving, working, reaching. I think that is why this video moved me so much. This young military man knows whats important. Just to be happy. Happy anyplace, anywhere and with anyone. Dont we all want to be happy? I know I do. Im grateful that I can find happiness in the simple things, my family used to tease me about it, but the past couple of years Ive let serious people, intense events and judgement cloud my thinking and forgot how to play. I love this family. I was very fortunate to get to photograph the mom and dads wedding, and so to photography their family portraits and childrens senior portraits is so sweet! We had a great day that started at the Ft. Worth Botanical Gardens and ended at their beautiful Log Cabin home in the country. We got so many beautiful shots I dont know which to show. I felt so at home at their home. They are the kind of people that when you are around them, you just feel good. And then they even let me stay for an amazing dinner of ELK! Sorry I have not been a good Blogger lately. So much has happened since our son graduated from High School! What a whirlwind summer that we have had! We moved him down to Texas A&M at College station and got him settled in. Hes staying at a wonderful off campus dorm that has all a young man could want, pool, workout room, tutor!, covered parking, close to all the hot spots and fun and close to the Engineering buildings! He bought a bike and is going to ride to all his classes. He is set up for success! Of course I cried all the way home. Bawling like a baby. Nothing really prepares you for your child leaving. Its a lot harder than i remember with his sister leaving. (which was 14 years ago!)

Were so proud of him, and how hard he worked all through school and still doing so well in his classes, and football and power lifting and always making it to Church 2 times a week and still having time for us, and his friends and hobbies. He truly is an inspiration. Friday night we went to his schools football game and it was so odd not seeing him out on that field, playing every play. I actually got teary eyed and missed him more than ever. Its funny, the times it hits you. Something small like seeing his favorite Fruit cocktail in the refrigerator that he loved to eat so much, and his room. The smell of his cologne and seeing his shirts hanging in the closet. I need to find a book on Empty Nest Syndrome because I definitely have a case of it bad!

I am very blessed to have my daughter just down the road and my two sweet grandsons. Getting hugs from them and love from the 4 of them make it more bearable that Scott is 5 hours away at school. I know this is the dream my son wanted for himself and I'm so happy for him. I just really miss him terribly. I get to see him soon, so that will be great. I talk to other moms, his friends moms who have had the same thing happen, their boys leaving for college and they are just like me. They have their teary moments.

A few years ago a friend of ours, a photographer couple from Mansfield Texas lost their son in a accidental drowning in Galveston Bay. I had just talked to their son just a few short weeks before hand and was devastated to hear the news. Their strength, and faith amazed me. I wondered how could any parent go on living when something so horrible happens. When I feel like I am overcome by sadness that my baby has flown the nest, i think of my sweet friends who Lost their son and all parents who have truly lost a child and i get perspective. I realize that it isn't that bad. and immediately stop my pity party!

The good news with an empty nest I can channel more of my energy into my photography business and really get after it! I have always tried to put our family first , even though I worked 50 hour weeks for many many years! I can now truly pour myself into my business.!

Ive got all kinds of new plans for the studio and look forward to seeing more of you in the future. thanks for all of you who have been patient with me during the past year, while I made lots of memories with our son and family. You are the best. and to you moms who have a child who flew the nest recently. I feel your pain. Make plans for a family portrait for the Thanksgiving break and have something beautiful to look at on your walls! I'm booking a session with a fellow MASTER PHOTOGRAPHER during that time myself!

Guess where Ive been?

Since our son is heading off for college in just a week. I had promised that I would take him on a trip. Just the two of us. His dad stayed home with the Dog. lol So, he and I went to the CBS Studios at Television City, Hollywood! We had tickets to the "PRICE IS RIGHT"!
We had VIP Tickets, just he and I got be in a special group of only 13 people. We got in quickly! It was 7:30 am on Tuesday. Im not supposed to say how we got them, or about what happened until it airs November 10th. (our sons birthday!) They tape 90 days before the shows actually air. But I will tell you that we didnt win, but our friend did and we got to be on stage with him! They took away our cell phones, and wouldnt allow any cameras on the LOT and swore our friend and us to secrecy. It was AMAZING! Drew Carey was so polite and has got quite a handshake.!
Heres a Photo the show took of us that we were allowed to have!

And we went to the famous place Called PINKS for HOT DOGS. It was fun to see all the movie stars and celebrities pictures on the walls. Its Def a Popular lunch place! Jay Leno, Ellen Degeneris, Tom Hanks, Adam Sandler, etc. etc. etc. !

And then we drove over to SANTA MONICA!!!

and I got to meet a TOM CRUISE LOOK ALIKE. The resemblance was uncanny! And when he smiled he looked even more like him! Amazing!!!

These precious little girls belong to a young lady that used to work for me! Keisha! Keisha first came to us for her Senior portraits and what a beautiful young lady she is. Of course her daughters are beautiful too, and they really rock these cute outfits. Keisha has the best taste in clothing that I know , so it didnt surprise me.

Ive been photographing the older sister, Raylee since she was an infant, I have her photos all over our studio including a beautiful baby album devoted completely to her! We had a great day, we started really early while it was still cool outside and the kids were happy. Thank you Keisha and Jake, I enjoyed playing with them!

Going Coastal!

Here is something I made in my spare time for our home. If you know me, you know i love the beach (I have since i was 2 and we lived in Oregon and we went to the beach often!) anything to do with the beach I love. Our home is very decorated beach like the past several years.
This is a fun project and easy to do. Just get yourself a 16 inch or smaller foam core wreath base, from Michaels, a hot glue gun, some raffia, a bunch of shells and some newspapers. Simply hot glue the shells to the form (I bought 6 bags of shells and used a few i had found while in Jacksonville, Florida. After you've hot glued them on, take some 24 guage wire and wrap it around the top to make a hanger for it. Then cut raffia and tie a bow. hang from the wire and raffia. (the wire just makes it that much stronger.) VIOLA! Coastal cuteness!

It took me a couple of days, and a few burned finger tips from the hot glue gun, but it turned out fun. I love to make wreaths for various times of the year. Its a little hobby of mine. Enjoy!

Winning Trophies ultimately for you, my clients!

I recently entered prints into a Texas Print Competition where I received 2 trophies and 2 Judges Choice ribbons!
Ive been entering print competiti
ons for 15 years and literally (ok not bragging but just sharing here.) a Storage building full of trophies and ribbons. I absolutely love entering. Its expensive, and time consuming, but it is so much fun. Im sort of strange in the aspect that I dont mind being torn apart verbally by judges. I thrive on critisism, , I learn that way, but many I know enter once, get their work ripped apart and then never enter again. Also you never know what judges you are going to get and what their taste is. I am a big gambler and I love to take risks and gambles, so I pony up the money, put my heart and soul into several images and risk it. Then I sit and listen and bite my tongue. I couldnt believe the wonderful comments I got this year. (and some negative ones too, from a judge who is my friend none the less! haha. But One judge brought the score from an 85 (which is really really good!) up to a 96 and another judge wanted it to go to a 100! They discussed and challenged each other for a full 8 minutes before finally settling and all agreeing on the score of 96. I was one point shy of winning two more awards, but a friend of mine got a 97 for a wonderful image she did of 4 women.

I did receive the trophy for "Best Electronic Imaging by a Master Photographer." and "Best Illustrated image by a Master". and two judges awarded me their coveted Judges Choice Ribbons. I was so honored! The competition was fierce and amazing! These two images titled "the Masquerade" and "Trick or Treat" were the winning images. I entered 4, another one was awarded a merit and the 4th did not score well, a 77 which is not great. :-)

It was a great time and I love streching myself in this way. its taken me 16 years to accumulate the skills and knowledge as to where now I know what will usually wow the judges. There are 12 elements. You cannot ask another photographer what to do with your images. They ahve to be your ideas, executed by you, or you could be disqualified. Im proud that I can create images to wow the judges. Its fun to hear their thoughts and feelings on my work! and I think it improves my day to day work for my clients. Im always streching myself, like a good actor does to be the best. It benefits not only me, but ultimately you, My treasured Client.

I shot these images with the amazing Dave Miymoto in Oahu last year for a magazine in hawaii. It was the creations of Debbie Heming! She is incredible! I had told our son I was going to take him to either Hawaii or California this summer before classes being in the Fall at TEXAS A&M in College Station. I bought him a surfboard recently and am leaning more towards OAHU! Mostly so he can meet Dave and his wife Michelle and also because Hawaii is just calling me. I love California and I know he and I will have a lot of fun there too, but Hawaii is just so much more beautiful.

They have a wonderful hotel there for Military personell which is so affordable and right on WAIKII BEACH, that we stayed at before. and my husband is a Pilot with UNITED AIRLINES so we can fly free! (space A)

So.... He told me to choose so Im going to flip a coin with him today after we both get off work and see which one it will be. He made mostly As his whole school career, was in AP Classes and never once got into any kind of trouble, so he def deserves a great trip! Heads California and Tails- OAHU. We will see.... (Secretly crossing fingers for OAHU) lol!

How I stay cool in this heat.

I shoot out in the heat a lot. We have a wonderful studio with cool painted concrete floors and central air, but a lot of times clients want something outdoors. If you've never tried one of these you have to get some!

They are bandanas filled with some sort of crystals that absorb water! I got mine at walmart a few years ago and love them. You simply fill a small bowl with water and some ice, and place them into the bowl for about 15 minutes. Soon the crystals will swell with water and then you simply tie them around your neck. Great for mowing the lawns, or attending a parade, or during a family picnic, etc. You can take along a thermos with ice water and put it back into the thermos (dont drink the water!) and resoak it as needed. (I take along 2 wraps,and alternate them every hour.) My father worked out doors all his life and I just wished these would of been around back then for him. :-(

Pick up a couple at Walmart or your local athletic supply store, or buy them online here! They are priceless when the temps soar and you're stuck in summer heat.

When I would ask her to climb a brick wall, she did it with zeal, jump into a spiderweb covered bus, she climbed up, asked her to walk around a salvage yard in 6 inch heels she said "SURE!". Her sparkly personality and twinkle in her eyes, says "Im a go getter!" I really enjoyed her. Lots of ice, Sonic, and some ice cold soaked bandanas kept us going in the heat for 4.5 hours!

Wow things have been very hectic here lately. Our son graduated high school and we've been really busy in the studio. Weekends we are at the lake or by the pool. I intend to get as much joy out of this summer as possible!
Tonight I grilled Teriyaki chicken with pineapple and wild brown rice and made a lemon bundt cake with real lemon juice! We love eating outdoors in the evening. (DINING AL FRESCO as they say!)
I hope you guys are all doing well and taking the time to enjoy the beautiful weather (although its getting pretty hot lately!)

This young lady first came into my studio I think when she was around one year old!
Her mother was one of our very first clients when I opened my studio up on Brooke Ave!
So it was so great that she came to me today for her Senior portraits. She will be 17 in a few days. WOW time sure flies.

It was great to catch up. Ive also photographer her mothers wedding and so many of their family memories. There is something to be said for Loyalty and it warms my heart!

Things have just been so hectic around here with easter, and seniors and all that goes along with that! I promise to blog more soon! Hope you are all enjoying the cooler weather. Praise the Lord we finally got some rain Saturday night here in the Falls.

At the light weigh in of 241.8, Scott squatted 710 lbs, Bench Pressed 500 pounds even and Dead lifted an amazing 625 lbs to win first place in Texas! A State championship, and 260 lbs ahead of his nearest competition! Scott and the team of three placed 3rd in the state of Texas!! YAY! Our son won a State Championship and is featured in todays (Sunday March 27, 2011) Times Record Newspaper in a great article. He worked so hard for 3 years for this State Title! We are so proud of the boys and our great coaches Michael Freeman and Coach Murdock, Brett Einhaus who has trained and helped the boys so much and also Mike Askew (who used to own Askews Gym in Burk) and a teacher who made a big impression on Scott, Monte Sparkman! Were so proud of our Scott. My husband, did a lot to help out too, as did a friend of the boys Steve Hill. We want to thank everyone for their support, our family and friends who have supported Scott in his efforts the past 3 years. Hes going to be interviewed again tonight on KFDX by Orlando Sanchez in the Sunday night sports corner at 10:30!! He already went and they taped it, and it will air between 10:30 and 11:00. The photo above is he and Orlando kidding around!

The Movie to see this weekend!

Wow Tonight I went to the movies with my sons girlfriend. We both wanted to see LIMITLESS with Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro. http://www.iamrogue.com/limitless/fullsite
It was as guessed a great movie!!! I loved it! I want to go and see it again. They do say we don't use all of our brain power, Ive read conflicting articles that say we do. The main character of the movie is an author who is struggling with writers block. His girlfriend leaves him and his apartment is in disarray. He doesn't shave and he is disheveled and depressed.

After a person from his past gives him a pill that in 30 seconds opens his mind up to where all synapes are firing and he has full access to every memory hes acquired in his life.! He can figure his way out of any situation using his brain to problem solve and to work out problems quickly.

Trouble ensues when he runs out of pills!
It is great, has a little violence and a few sexy scenes, but nothing bad really.
Its a movie that keeps you on your toes! I had to go the ladies room and held it as long as I could! I definitely recommend it!

Well, with this warmer weather comes Spring/Summer cooking! Our son is preparing for the State Powerlifting meet in Abilene this weekend, and he's watching his weight. He cannot go over 242 lbs and he is pretty close right now, so I made Sugar Free Jello for dessert tonight. It is one of his favorites and we havent had it in a year! I love jello. A touch of whipped cream won't hurt though, will it? Mmmm simple things are the best things. :-) Be kind to one another.

I made plenty so come and sit a spell, and have one with me! They are so good.

When I started my blog 5 years ago, there just wasnt that many around. I was attracted to blogging because I love to write! As a kid I kept in touch with friends by writing letters ( yes i wrote to my kindergarden friend for a while when I was only 6 and 7 years old, after we moved from Odessa to Plainview.)

Then I wrote letters to my grandparents for years and years as a kid always starting my letters the same. Dear Grandmother and Grandfather, How are you? I am fine. Id love to see those letters, but im afraid after thier passing someone tossed them out.
What a treasure they would be to see and read and to hear how my mind was working as a 12 year old, etc...
My best friend when I was 14 was Francie Whitaker and when my parents divorced, and I moved back to Odessa at 15 years of age, she and I kept in touch with our letters.! Oh how I would get so excited to get a letter in the mail from Francie. I loved her handwriting, her little drawings and all the fun things she would talk to me about. We competed on getting new fun stationary, my taste leaned towards Snoopy, Ziggy and that cat with tennis shoes from the late 70s. Hers was anything pretty and fun and often times, "Precious Moments" children.

I loved the loopy way she wrote my name on the envelope, i would relish opening each envelope slowly savoring every word she wrote. Using my vivid imagination (Ive always had a huge imagination) and picturing all the events and things she would write about, flying with her dad, he was a pilot and would take them on vacation in a plane.) just the day to day fun things that I so missed that she was doing. She would write about her sisters, who she had a crush on, trips and just the mundane updates about school, etc. She'd write about the adventures we would have when school was out and we could visit and about our upcoming trip to Six Flags over Texas.
THen when I was in college, my dad and i would write back and forth to each other a lot. Sometimes I would get 2 letters a week from him! It was a treat because long distance phone calls were expensive then and a letter was so much better. My dad has the prettiest handwriting, due to his grandfather who had been a teacher and a principal who taught him "penmanship".
Now in the days of Texting, email and Facebook, that long lost art has all but died! I try to mail out handwritten thank you notes to my clients when I can. Its not always possible but I try my best. I always enjoy getting cards in the mail from clients and friends and espcially our Itallian friend Luigi who lives in Northern Italy. I love the beautiful stamps on his envelopes too.

So... blogging is my main form of writing these days. I dont write as much, with a teenage son, grown daughter and 2 grandsons, life is pretty hectic. Not to mention running my studio, and taking and editing pictures. Ive kept this pace up for a long time. I pride myself on several things. My loyalty as a friend. My ability to not quit at things, I tend to stick it out to the end in almost everything i start, and the way I keep a level and cool head in a crisis. But i find Im getting older and tire more easily of things. My priorities are shifting as Im approaching my 50s. (I just turned 48 a couple of weeks ago.) Im probably going to blogging Less, but saying more when I do.

For those of you who read my blog, I hope you dont mind. I have written over 10,000 posts on this blog in the 5 years since i started it. My parents are getting older and they live 6 hours away. Im going to focus more on my family and little less on my blog. I love to bake, cook, decorate, garden, travel and love those in my life. It doesnt mean I dont love my business. We still operate a full time studio 4-5 days a week and I employ a full time employee. But Ill be blogging less and living more. Thanks for those who have been with me for this journey. Ill see you soon!

Its looking a lot like Spring around here! Here are a few shots around the house.

The portrait above my bombay chest was taken in 1996 by Joe Rogers Photography. I love that portrait! Joe is a great guy and has been a friend of ours since about 1995. Our son was 4 and our daughter was only 14. Now she is 29 and hes 18! I cant beleive that was 14 years ago!!!
The value of a portrait grows more in value every passing year. I wouldn't take a million dollars for this portrait! It was taken out in front of our home, the home we built when we moved to Wichita Falls in 1994. The size is a 20x24, which is a great size!

I want to get a new one taken by Joe this Spring, before our son goes off to college at Texas A&M. in the same spot, with his sister too. It will be a great heirloom. Portraits are like that. They become our most treasured possesions next to our family. And how lucky am i to be in the Heirloom Portrait business!?!

And what would spring be without some tasty cupcakes? I made these, but they are not near as good as my friend DENAS! From Dream Bakers!

Since October, we've had the nicest young lady working for us!
Meet Jacquelyn Nicole, or "JACKIE". Jackie came to us as a client, after graduating and wanting some pictures to commermate her graduation. She is 22 and friendly, smart and always bends over backwards for our clients. Shes been here for 6 months and we think shes pretty terrific!
We thought she deserved a new photo shoot so we went out yesterday and did some. She got her hair done at TANGLES in Parker Square and I applied her makedup (many people dont know that Im a pretty good makeup artist! I learned from a professional M.U.A. that worked for me in Japan for 3 years.) We had a great day. Shes so spunky and funny. I already love her like a long lost daughter. SHes a hard worker and never says no to late nights, weekends or whatever she has to do to help our clients and the studio out. Heres to you Miss Jackie V! We Love you! :-) Be kind to one another!

Wow, Last Saturday was my birthday and what a wonderful day it was! First of all it started in Decatur TX at our sons Powerlifting teams Regional Meet! 4 boys qualified to go to the meet and they did very well!
2 boys won First in their weight divisions! (Zac Romine and our son Scott) another boy Camron Senters won 2nd and our 4th lifter Brian Keksi won 4th and if he had lifted10 more pounds would of won 3rd! They did fantastic and we are all so proud of all of them. Our son also won 3 trophies in addition to a Gold Medal!

The other boys in this shot are from various regional schools. Thats our Scott on Top with GOLD!

See the videos below to get a real feel of the meet! It was a great day, its been so fun with the coaches, boys, parents and everyone. Its like we one big happy family!!!

This is Rosa lia, She is 4 and so adorable! She and i played together with my Easter Decorations, 2 chickens and a bunny and some edible easter eggs, and had a great time. I had this cute little doll I bought the other day (for no reason, I just fell in love with it) and so she loved it and I had to give it to her.

She speaks both spanish and English really well and shes only 4. She was so much fun, I wish I had a grandaughter! I didnt get much work done for about 3 hours but i had the best time with Rosa lia! What an angel, kids really do take my stress away and make me happy. Thank you Maria for bringing her, what you thought was going to be a burden turned into one of the best days i have had in a while!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR BLOG! The Photography by Dixie Blog is 5 years old this March! (and my birthday is the 5th! YAY!) (and thet studio will have its 15th anniversary in June!)

We were the first Photo studio in Wichita Falls to have a blog. I wrote a great article about creating your own blog for the Texas Professional Photographer magazine called "GOT BLOG?" and many wrote to me for advice and started their own! Ive personally written over 10,000 posts!

Had a super weekend, how about you?

Wow, the weather has been really unusual lately. Cold nights, super warms days (my car temp gauge said the air temp was 90 F yesterday! And the wind and grass fires up near Amarillo, etc.
We had a great weekend, My son and I rode with the Head Power lifting Coach, Freeman to Leonard Texas for the Girls Regional Power lifting meet! We are proud to say our lone girl AMBER won first place in her weight division! She was amazing! Our son Scott wrapped her knees and helped her prepare for her lifts and I went as a chaperon and cheerleader for Amber! (however I'm afraid my snoring might have cost her some sleep!) We stayed at a very nice hotel in Sherman and had a great day. We knew Amber would take a gold medal, shes got that inner and outer strength. She amazes us all! Way to go AMBER! Sunday I got some much needed grandma time with my 2 grandsons. We had a fun day at the mall and Chuck E. Cheese.

I'm so excited for Summer to be here soon. We have a beautiful pool and our grandsons really enjoy it, I love to garden and will have the back yard full of flowers and planning trips. I am not sure if I'm taking our son back to Hawaii for his Sr. trip or if we will go on a cruise in the Caribbean. I have a good friend in Hawaii that is an amazing photographer and he is an avid surfer so we most likely will go to Honolulu! Scott's up for either one.

Hope you guys have a great week! My birthday is this Saturday and we will be at Scott's regional Power lifting meet, where hopefully he will break the state record (he only missed by 25 lbs last week.)
